Thoughts of retiring, for most people, are associated with thoughts ofSocial security. When you sign up for Social Security benefits you will be asked for proof of your age. No one is questioning the fact that you were born, but proof of exactly when you were born is quite important. Your age determines whether you are old enough to receive monmiy Social Security retirement checks and your age determines how much you will receive. If you were born in a state that required registration of your birth at the time, all that is needed is a certified copy of your birth certificate. How ever, if you were born in North Carolina, you will not have an original birth certificate since the first ones weren’t recorded until 1913. A delayed birth certificate just isn’t the same as one recorded at or soon after a person's birth. Sometimes you will be asked to present other, older evidence of your age. Such evidence might consist of a baptismal or other church rec ord, an old family Bible, an old insurance policy or a birth certificate of one of your oldest children. If you don’t have any of these records, ask at your Social Security Office. The office serv ing this area is at 25 First Avenue, NE, Hickory, and is open from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M., Monday through Thursday, and from 9 A.M. to 7 P.M. each Friday. The people there will gladly tell you what you need to bring with you when you get ready to sign up for Social Security benefits. It is not necessary for you to retire in order to establish your age for Social Security purposes. It can be done at any time. Remember, attend to it now and your transition from working to retirement will go much more smoothly.
